A drone strike sinks a second merchant ship in a week in NATO member Bulgaria's Black Sea waters, Ahold Delhaize's U.S. grocery sites stay dark, and North Korea touts a missile test and puts an ICBM on display as Trump floats a meeting with Kim

Bulgarian Prime Minister Rumen Radev said drones hit two cargo ships in Bulgaria's exclusive economic zone early Tuesday, sinking the Azov Concord, with Reuters reporting 11 crew missing, and said he would summon Russia's ambassador because “the result is in favour of the Russian Federation.” Ahold Delhaize's systems are offline for a third day, with websites and online ordering down at Food Lion, Stop & Shop, Hannaford and Giant while stores stay open. North Korea said it tested a “tactical” ballistic missile Monday and showed Kim Jong Un at a museum displaying the Hwasong-20 ICBM, a day after Trump said he “may” meet Kim on his November Asia trip; meanwhile the Houthis targeted Riyadh for a third straight day and UKMTO confirmed six ship strikes around Hormuz on Oct 11. Brent eased to $105.07 (-1.48%) on prospects of more Russian diesel, Seoul's Kospi plunged to 6,035.35 (-5.46%) on fears over China's CXMT, and the VIX is at 15.40 (+1.25%).

UKMTO confirms six ship strikes around Hormuz in a single day as oil eases on Russia's diesel pledge

The U.K. Maritime Trade Operations center confirmed six vessel strikes on Sunday, Oct 11, and at least 12 tankers were attacked in and around the Strait of Hormuz over the past week, The National reported Tuesday; UKMTO reclassified an incident near Oman's Sohar anchorage from suspicious activity to an attack after confirming a tanker was hit by a drone. The Panama-flagged crude carrier Gem No 2 was struck by a drone off the UAE, and its 22 crew are safe (The National). Iran International, tallying UKMTO warnings, counted 12 ships attacked from Oct 5 to Oct 11 and six on Oct 11 alone (five tankers and a container ship), and quoted Mohsen Rezaei, secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, as saying the U.S. accepted some of Iran's seven conditions but that Tehran considers its response “inadequate.” Secretary of State Marco Rubio said “the Strait of Hormuz is open,” while Iran's Mohammadreza Naqdi said it “is closed” and under the “full control” of Iran's armed forces (The National). Oil fell for the first time in nearly a week on prospects of more Russian diesel (Reuters via Aaj English TV), after Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak said Russia would restore diesel exports to levels above those outlined in its deal with Trump (Investing.com); KCM Trade's Tim Waterer said Russian diesel and steadier Saudi flows offer some relief but the market looks more worried about further hits to ships or pipelines in the Gulf (Reuters via Aaj English TV). Brent is at $105.07 (-1.48%) and WTI at $92.08 (-1.77%) (collected values).

Analytic judgmentUKMTO logged six strikes in a single day, Tehran's top security official calls Washington's reply “inadequate,” and U.S. and Iranian officials can't even agree on whether the strait is open, so it is very unlikely that the U.S. and Iran announce an agreement on Hormuz shipping between Oct 13 and Oct 31 (resolves 2026-10-31).

B1Kospi plunges as foreign investors dump chipmakers on CXMT fears

The Kospi closed at 6,035.35 (-5.46%) after briefly falling below 6,000, triggering a sell-side sidecar for the first time in nearly two months as Samsung Electronics and SK hynix led losses and foreign investors sold heavily (The Korea Herald). Seoul Economic Daily and Newspim tied the selloff to CXMT's plan to launch 4F² server DRAM by year-end, though some analysts say the announcement is not the same as proven mass production, with yields and customer validation still unproven.

GEO-02Drone strikes

Drone strikes sink a second ship in a week in NATO member Bulgaria's Black Sea waters as Sofia summons Russia's ambassador

Prime Minister Rumen Radev said drones struck two merchant ships in Bulgaria's Black Sea exclusive economic zone on Tuesday, Oct 13, and one sank (Al Jazeera, Reuters via Cyprus Mail). The Maltese-flagged, Ukrainian-owned Chelsea 3 was hit by three drones about 18 nautical miles east of Byala around 1:30 a.m. local time; all 15 crew, seven Ukrainians and eight Azerbaijanis, were rescued (Novinite, The Sofia Globe). The Turkish-run Azov Concord sank about 17 nautical miles off Krapets, and Reuters said 11 crew were missing. “This is absolutely unacceptable – another attack in the immediate vicinity of Bulgarian territorial waters,” Radev said, adding, “We do not have clear evidence to accuse any of the parties. But logic indicates that the result is in favour of the Russian Federation” (The Sofia Globe). He said he would summon Russian Ambassador Eleonora Mitrofanova and speak with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte (The Sofia Globe, Novinite), and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said “the Black Sea has become another front of escalation of the Russian war in Ukraine” (Reuters via Cyprus Mail). A drone attack in Bulgaria's EEZ on Oct 6 also sank a cargo ship (The Sofia Globe, Reuters via Cyprus Mail).

Analytic judgmentThe attacker is unidentified and Bulgaria is turning to NATO, but strikes have now hit the same waters a week apart, so it is likely that another merchant ship is struck by a drone or missile in Bulgaria's EEZ or territorial waters between Oct 14 and Nov 12, Bulgarian time (resolves 2026-11-12).

North Korea touts a ‘tactical’ missile test and puts the Hwasong-20 ICBM on display as Trump says he “may” meet Kim

North Korea's Missile Administration test-fired a tactical ballistic missile on Oct 12 “to confirm the success in the research for the technical upgrading of an important core element,” KCNA said Tuesday, calling it “a big success heralding an important change in improving the performance and sophistication of all offensive weapon systems” (Yonhap via The Korea Herald, UPI). South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff said multiple ballistic missiles were fired from the Pyongyang area toward the East Sea, with one type flying more than 900 km, and U.S. Indo-Pacific Command said it tracked two ballistic missiles that did “not pose an immediate threat to U.S. personnel or territory” (UPI, The Korea Herald). KCNA photos showed Kim Jong Un, with his wife Ri Sol Ju and daughter Ju Ae, opening a Defense Revolution Museum on Sunday, where a display in front of the Hwasong-20 ICBM launcher appeared to show a multiple-warhead design and a world map with ranges extending beyond the U.S. mainland (Reuters via NBC News). Asked Monday at the White House whether he would meet Kim during his mid-November Asia trip, Trump said, “I may. That'll be exciting, won't it? But I get along with him”; the APEC summit is set for Nov 18–19 in Shenzhen, China (Yonhap via The Korea Times). South Korean, U.S. and Japanese diplomats held a phone call Tuesday to share information on the launch and discuss responses (Aju Business Daily).

Analytic judgmentTrump says he “may” meet Kim, but Pyongyang has not responded publicly and is showcasing missile tests and an ICBM instead, so it is very unlikely that Trump and Kim meet in person between Oct 13 and Nov 30 (resolves 2026-11-30).

C2Russia's emergencies minister makes a first-ever visit to Pyongyang

TASS said Emergencies Minister Alexander Kurenkov met North Korean Premier Pak Thae Song in Pyongyang on Oct 13, thanked North Korean troops for helping retake part of the Kursk Region and visited a museum honoring them; it is the first visit to North Korea by a Russian emergencies minister.

  • B2Analysts tag the Oct 12 missile as a Hwasong-11 variantShin Jong-woo of the Korea Defense and Security Forum identified the missile in North Korea's photos as a Hwasong-11Da carrying a 2.5-ton warhead; Japan detected at least two missiles, and JCS spokesman Jang Do-young said Seoul's data closely match Japan's while analysis continues on whether short- or medium-range missiles were involved (UPI).

U.S. Impact Assessment

  • Grocery and retail cyber resilienceAhold Delhaize's U.S. chains have lost websites, online ordering and app-linked discounts for a third day while stores keep trading, and H&M is checking claims about its data. U.S. grocers and food distributors should test how long stores, pricing and replenishment can run with e-commerce, loyalty and back-office systems offline, and retailers should be ready to verify or rule out extortion claims about their data quickly.
  • Shipping and war-risk exposureA second ship has sunk in a week inside a NATO member's Black Sea waters, and UKMTO confirmed six strikes around Hormuz in a single day. U.S. shippers, charterers and commodity traders with Black Sea or Gulf cargoes should expect higher war-risk premiums and longer transits and check how their contracts handle diversions and delays.
  • Energy and personnel in Saudi ArabiaBrent eased to $105.07 (-1.48%) on Russia's pledge to raise diesel exports, but Houthi fire on Riyadh and the Hormuz attacks keep supply risk high, so fuel buyers should not count on Russian diesel to bring quick relief. U.S. companies with staff in Saudi Arabia should plan around King Khalid airport's closure through Oct 17, Etihad and Gulf Air cancellations and Delta's postponed Atlanta–Riyadh launch.
  • Chips and the Korean PeninsulaSeoul's 5.46% drop on fears over CXMT's denser server DRAM shows how fast memory-supply expectations can swing, so U.S. buyers of server memory should watch whether CXMT actually ships 4F² parts. Defense and Indo-Pacific planners should treat North Korea's new tests and its Hwasong-20 display as the backdrop to any Trump–Kim diplomacy around the Nov 18–19 APEC summit.

CYB-01Ahold Delhaize's

Ahold Delhaize's systems stay dark for a third day, with U.S. grocery websites and online ordering still down

Ahold Delhaize, owner of Food Lion, Stop & Shop, Hannaford and the Giant Food banners, said it is dealing with a security issue and that its teams “are taking steps to assess and mitigate the issue. This includes taking some systems offline to help protect them” (Supermarket News). Websites for its U.S. supermarket chains went offline and online grocery ordering and delivery were suspended while stores stayed open; loyalty discounts and app-linked savings were also unavailable, and electronic shelf labels showed outdated prices (Supermarket News). As of Tuesday morning, Oct 13, online services at Albert Heijn, Etos and Gall & Gall had been down since Sunday afternoon, distribution-center work had stopped and some Dutch stores had empty shelves (NL Times). The company has called it a “cybersecurity incident” without saying whether it was hacked; security expert Pim Takkenberg told NL Times, “It seems quite clear to me that a malicious actor has been inside the system,” while Eward Driehuis said the company may instead have found a vulnerability and shut systems while fixing it (NL Times, DutchNews.nl). Ahold Delhaize said there is “no reason to see a connection” with the cyberattack on French supermarket refrigeration (DutchNews.nl).

Analytic judgmentAhold Delhaize has given no restoration timeline and experts read the broad shutdown as a sign of intrusion, but stores are trading and the company describes the shutdowns as protective, so it is likely that online grocery ordering resumes at one or more of its U.S. banners between Oct 14 and Oct 31 (resolves 2026-10-31).

Houthis target Riyadh for a third straight day as King Khalid airport stays shut through Oct 17 and Saudis probe air-defense failures

The Houthis fired a missile at Riyadh's King Khalid International Airport on Monday, Oct 12, for a third straight day and launched missiles and a drone toward Khamis Mushait and its air base; the Saudi-led coalition said all three missiles were intercepted and destroyed, and the Houthis warned airlines the airport is “unsafe” (Al Jazeera). Al Jazeera and ABC News (Australia) said at least 14 people have been killed and more than 300 wounded in the airport attacks, and that the airport will stay closed through Saturday, Oct 17. Both outlets said Saudi Arabia is investigating why its air defenses failed to stop the incoming weapons, with initial findings that drones were sent ahead to clear a path for missiles that traveled more than 1,000 km. Etihad canceled Riyadh, Dammam and Jeddah flights until next week, Gulf Air halted Riyadh service through Saturday, and Delta postponed the Oct 23 launch of its Atlanta–Riyadh route (Al Jazeera). Trump said “the Houthis are misbehaving very badly. No good” (Al Jazeera), but said only that he was looking at direct U.S. strikes (ABC News).

Analytic judgmentTrump is still only “looking at” direct strikes, while Houthi fire on Riyadh continues and Saudi Arabia probes its air-defense failures, so it is a roughly even chance that U.S. forces strike Houthi targets in Yemen between Oct 13 and Oct 31 UTC (resolves 2026-10-31).
