Iran's Revolutionary Guards claim two supertankers hit mines south of Hormuz and President Trump floats 'another little Epic Fury' as Saudi air defenses knock down a Houthi ballistic missile aimed at Riyadh; Kim Jong Un crosses into China for what Seoul expects to be a same-day visit

The naval arm of Iran's Revolutionary Guards said two supertankers carrying more than 4.5 million barrels of crude hit mines on an 'unauthorized route' in the southern Strait of Hormuz and were abandoned by their crews, though no ship names or independent confirmation have surfaced; the same day, President Trump said, 'We may do another little Epic Fury, or they'll agree.' Early Saturday the Saudi-led coalition said it intercepted a Houthi ballistic missile fired at Riyadh, and as of Friday's close Brent is at $111.70 (+2.80%), WTI at $103.27 (+3.82%) and the Dow at 52,215.16 (-1.23%). Korean Air and Asiana said customer booking data was exposed through unauthorized access to an Amadeus account using valid login credentials, possibly going back to August 2023. Kim Jong Un crossed into Dandong, China, where South Korean officials say he met Premier Li Qiang, and Russia and Ukraine both confirmed the Oleshky truce starts early Oct 27, with Zelenskiy saying three-way technical talks are set for Abu Dhabi in the first half of November.

Korean Air and Asiana say booking data leaked through credential-based access to an Amadeus account, possibly since August 2023

Korean Air said Oct 23 that Amadeus IT Group, the travel-technology company that runs its reservation and ticketing systems, notified it on the night of Oct 20 of signs that personal data had leaked, and Asiana confirmed exposure through the same provider (Seoul Economic Daily, Kyunghyang Shinmun). The carriers said the incident stemmed from unauthorized access using login credentials assigned to an Amadeus system account, that booking reference numbers were among the exposed data, and that the access may have taken place between August 2023 and September 2026; the exact timing, scale and full list of data types are still under investigation by Amadeus. Payment data, kept on a separate system, was not affected, and Korean Air said it found no signs of compromise of its own systems or databases. Korean Air said, 'We take this situation very seriously and will devote every effort to preventing additional damage and recurrence,' and said no secondary damage had been confirmed; Amadeus has blocked the access and begun dark-web monitoring (Kyunghyang Shinmun, Seoul Economic Daily). Separately, heise reported on Oct 13 that Amadeus had been notified on Sept. 21 of a 'potential vulnerability' in a display environment for travel bookings, which it fixed; whether that is linked to the Korean carriers' incident has not been established (heise).

Analytic judgmentWith a possible exposure window of more than three years, abuse of a vendor account's valid credentials and the scope still undetermined, it is likely that phishing texts and emails using booking references and itineraries to impersonate airlines or travel agencies will follow over the next 30 days.
Likelihood Likely (55–80%)Confidence Low

Today's sliceThis round's Pizza Index is single-source again: pizzint.watch timed out after 90 seconds, so there's no cross-check — no second DOUGHCON reading, no shared-store comparison and no way to tell whether a shop one site lists as closed shows up as a spike on the other. uspizzaindex.com alone reads DOUGHCON 3 (gauge 60, 'ELEVATED'). The snapshot was taken at 5:15 a.m. ET on Saturday, Oct 24 — past the 10 p.m.–2 a.m. late-night window and well before anyone's breakfast — so Papa John's (+133%) and District Pizza Palace (+94%) showing 'much busier than usual' may just be big percentages riding on a tiny pre-dawn baseline. Trump: 'We may do another little Epic Fury, or they'll agree'; Saudi coalition downs a Houthi ballistic missile over Riyadh

Talking about the Iran war on Friday, Oct 23, President Trump said, 'We may do another little Epic Fury, or they'll agree,' adding, 'If they're smart, they'll just say, let's get down to business. But, you know, I doubt they'll do that' (Jerusalem Post, Ynet, Business Today). Epic Fury is the name of the U.S. campaign against Iran that began Feb. 28. Ynet reported the White House had pledged on Oct 22 not to resume attacks before the Nov. 3 midterms, and the Jerusalem Post cited a New York Times report that U.S. and Israeli militaries have drawn up plans for short, intense strikes on Iranian energy infrastructure, nuclear sites and weapons after the election. The War Zone noted the State Department on Oct 21 ordered non-emergency U.S. government employees and their families out of Saudi Arabia, citing Houthi attacks. Early Saturday, coalition spokesman Turki al-Malki said, 'Air defences intercepted and destroyed a ballistic missile launched by the Houthi terrorist militia towards Riyadh,' and said a drone was also downed over the Eastern Province; two explosions were heard in the capital and an early-warning alert went out (The Business Standard, Bernama/Anadolu, Yahoo News). An unnamed Iranian official warned that 'if Iran is attacked, there will be no more red lines… from undersea cables to military bases, including covert ones' (Business Today).

Analytic judgmentThe president paired the strike talk with an opening for a deal, and reports of a pre-midterm pledge not to resume attacks sit alongside reports of post-election strike plans, so it is unlikely that U.S. forces strike a target on Iranian territory by Nov 3, 2026.

GEO-05Both militaries

Both militaries confirm the Oleshky truce starts early Oct 27; Zelenskiy says U.S., Russian and Ukrainian negotiators will meet in Abu Dhabi in early November

Russia's chief of general staff, Valery Gerasimov, said his forces would halt fire from 4 a.m. local time on Oct 27, and Ukraine's General Staff said it would observe the truce from the same moment (3 a.m. Kyiv time), settling the start date after the White House had cited Oct 29 (The Moscow Times, Kyiv Independent). The truce is meant to let humanitarian aid into Oleshky, evacuate civilians through a designated corridor to the destination of their choice in Russia or Ukraine, and clear mines; it was negotiated by Ukraine's human rights ombudsman Dmytro Lubinets and his Russian counterpart Yana Lantratova (Kyiv Independent). Zelenskiy said Oct 23 that negotiators from Ukraine, Russia and the United States had agreed to meet at a technical level in Abu Dhabi in the first half of November, 'and as early as possible,' and that he had spoken with U.S. envoys Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff after their meeting with Vladimir Putin earlier in the week. He said a similar meeting expected in October never materialized, blaming Russia, and said any deal would need strong security guarantees and 10 years of funding for Ukraine's army (Business Recorder/Reuters, The Moscow Times). The Moscow Times quoted a U.S. official as saying the next round could come in a couple of weeks in Abu Dhabi or Switzerland. HELIOS found no Kremlin confirmation of the meeting during the collection window.

Analytic judgmentZelenskiy has announced an agreed technical-level meeting in Abu Dhabi and the U.S. envoys briefed Kyiv after seeing Putin, but the Kremlin has not confirmed and an October round already fell through, so it is likely that official Russian, Ukrainian and U.S. delegations hold an in-person trilateral meeting by Nov 30, 2026.

C3IRGC says it hit four 'violating' tankers and destroyed navigation gear on Oct 22

Per Xinhua, the IRGC said it struck four more tankers it called violators on Thursday; Iran has barred safe passage for vessels tied to the United States and Israel since Feb. 28. The targets and damage are an unconfirmed party claim (Xinhua).

U.S. Impact Assessment

  • Energy and fuel pricesBrent closed the week at $111.70 (+2.80%) and WTI at $103.27 (+3.82%) in the collected data. Iran's claim that it is mining tankers off an 'unauthorized' southern route, together with the president's talk of another strike campaign, keeps supply risk high heading into the Nov. 3 midterms, so refiners, airlines and fleet operators should plan for sharp moves when trading resumes Sunday evening if anything happens over the weekend.
  • Force protection in the GulfNon-emergency U.S. government staff and families were ordered out of Saudi Arabia on Oct 21, and Houthi ballistic missiles keep reaching Riyadh's airspace. U.S. firms with staff in Saudi Arabia and the Gulf should keep shelter, travel and evacuation plans current, especially given Iranian threats against undersea cables and military bases if Iran is struck again.
  • Corporate travel and vendor accessThe Korean carriers' breach ran through a vendor account's valid credentials at a travel-tech provider that serves airlines worldwide. Travel managers should warn employees about refund and rebooking scams that cite real booking codes, and security teams should require multifactor authentication and access-log reviews for third-party accounts that touch customer data.
  • Canada tradeThe administration is swapping products on and off the 50% Canada tariff list rather than cutting it. Importers and manufacturers sourcing from Canada should check the proclamation's lists before the changes take effect at the end of October and watch for further election-season adjustments.

Iran's Guards say two supertankers hit mines on an 'unauthorized' route south of Hormuz; no names, no independent confirmation

The naval arm of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said Friday, Oct 23, through state news agency IRNA, that two supertankers trying to use an 'unauthorized route' in the southern Strait of Hormuz struck naval mines, that explosions and fires in their engine rooms left both disabled and that their crews abandoned ship; it said the two were carrying more than 4.5 million barrels of crude (Xinhua, A News). Per Xinhua, the IRGC also said it hit four other 'violating' tankers and destroyed their navigation equipment on Oct 22, and an IRGC official warned of 'much more crushing actions' if 'oil smuggling' resumes. The vessels' names, flags and exact positions were not released, and HELIOS found no confirmation from UKMTO, the owners or U.S. forces during the collection window (A News, Gulf News). The IRGC made a similar two-tanker mine claim on Oct 17 that also went unconfirmed (gCaptain/Reuters). Yahoo News, citing Washington Institute data, said October has seen at least 28 confirmed attacks on ships in the strait, the worst month on record, and 113 since February; a container ship and a dry bulk carrier sank near the strait in mid-October after projectile strikes (gCaptain/Reuters). As of collection, Brent is at $111.70 (+2.80%) and WTI at $103.27 (+3.82%).

Analytic judgmentThe IRGC's claim of two abandoned supertankers is unverified, and none of the supertankers damaged this month has been reported sunk in the sources reviewed, but with attacks running at a record pace and two merchant ships already lost near the strait in mid-October, there is a roughly even chance that at least one merchant ship attacked in the Strait of Hormuz, the Persian Gulf or the Gulf of Oman sinks by Nov 15, 2026.
Likelihood Roughly even chance (45–55%)Confidence Low

Kim Jong Un crosses into China at Dandong for a short visit; South Korean officials say Premier Li Qiang met him

Kim Jong Un crossed the New Yalu River Bridge aboard his special train and arrived in the Chinese border city of Dandong on Saturday, Oct 24, and Chinese Premier Li Qiang met him there, according to South Korean officials (Investing.com/Reuters, Yahoo News, Korea JoongAng Daily). China's foreign ministry did not immediately comment, and neither Beijing nor Pyongyang had confirmed the visit as of collection (Al Jazeera, Yahoo News). The trip comes a day before Oct. 25, which both countries mark as the anniversary of Chinese troops entering the Korean War, and is Kim's sixth visit to China and his first since September 2025 (Korea Times, Al Jazeera). A ruling-party source told Yonhap that Kim was expected to return home the same day, calling it 'a very brief visit' (Seoul Economic Daily, Korea JoongAng Daily), and South Korea's National Intelligence Service reportedly told lawmakers on Friday that rumors of Kim's death were unfounded (Korea JoongAng Daily). The bridge, finished in 2014, sat unused for years because North Korea had not built connecting roads and customs facilities, and officially opened this month (Korea Times, Al Jazeera). A South Korean official told Reuters a Beijing stop ahead of the Communist Party's high-level meetings starting Monday was unlikely. Ahead of the Nov. 18–19 APEC summit in Shenzhen, Trump said on Oct 19, 'I'm not sure that anybody's asking for a meeting,' and Kyungnam University's Lim Eul-chul said he sees 'almost no possibility of a meeting' (France 24/AFP).

Analytic judgmentKim met China's premier rather than Xi Jinping in a border city on a same-day trip, Trump has said he isn't sure anyone is asking for a meeting, and analysts see little prospect of one, so it is very unlikely that Trump and Kim meet in person by Nov 30, 2026.

Marine Insight put the Khoryv 13 nautical miles off Constanța, while Meduza (Reuters) said 24 km off the coast, and HELIOS did not see the Romanian defense ministry's or naval authority's own statement. Reports of a fire at the Tolyattikauchuk petrochemical plant in Russia's Samara region early Saturday came only from a monitoring channel and were not used.
  • Pending grades: 'taiwan-cwa-champi-land-warning-oct25' appears to have happened, since the Taipei Times and Focus Taiwan say the CWA issued a land warning on Oct 22 and planned to lift it Saturday evening. 'taiwan-champi-landfall-oct26' looks unlikely to resolve yes, with the center passing offshore and about 170 km east-northeast of Yilan, heading north, on Saturday morning. 'black-sea-bg-ro-eez-ship-hit-oct31' appears to have happened, since Romania's president said the Khoryv sank after a drone hit it outside Romanian territorial waters on Oct 23, though a formal government statement still needs checking. For 'cisa-kev-sonicwall-cve-2026-102255-oct25', the CVE was not among KEV additions through Oct 23 and no Oct 24 addition was found. For 'hormuz-merchant-ship-sinks-nov15', no sinking after the Oct 14 losses, which fall before the window, has been confirmed.

Grading: source and information reliability use the Admiralty (NATO) 6×6 scale (A–F / 1–6); judgments use ICD 203 likelihood language with analytic confidence (high · moderate · low). Major items are cross-checked against at least two independent sources; single-source items are listed under intelligence gaps.

Market colors follow U.S. convention: green for gains, red for losses. The Pentagon Pizza Index is a side indicator shown for interest only — public figures from uspizzaindex.com, cross-checked with pizzint.watch — and is not used in the threat level or any judgment.
